The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was found guilty of planning a government overthrow in last fall and given more than a 27-year term in prison, but he remained under home detention pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after "new facts" came to light.

This involved trying to remove his ankle monitor and a summons to a demonstration that could "allow for a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a document approving the custody, the judge said information from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His son, his son Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a gathering of his followers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

His son wrote on online platforms on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I call on you to fight with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the potential of the former president's move to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of organizing to request asylum through a consular facility", a announcement said.

The legal document highlights that the US embassy in the national capital, Brasilia, is positioned around 8 miles from the former president's residence.

Global Responses

His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative United States President Trump, prompting him to enact a 50% tariff on imports of Brazilian goods.

Bolsonaro is being held in a national police facility in Brasilia and will have a custody hearing on Sunday.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with digital surveillance.

They also petitioned that the former president be allowed to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he needed regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of orchestrating a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plot which involved plans to assassinate his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The plot was prevented because it couldn't obtain the support of the military leaders. His successor was inaugurated without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, many Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised official structures in the capital, the capital city.

The police took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been encouraged by him whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to step in, restore order and reinstate his authority.

At the period, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The ex-leader called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the next presidential race.
