EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.

  • The nation of Palau has agreed to accept a limited number of migrants from the US in return for increased assistance, following concluding a memorandum of understanding with Washington.
