An underground economy for unapproved slimming drugs is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on messaging platforms, based on new investigations.
Experimental Treatment Gaining Traction Via Social Media
The experimental drug, which remains in research studies, is being advertised by social media influencers for its supposed weight-reducing effects. Followers are encouraged to message these profiles privately for supplier links, while also obtaining discount codes.
Active Trade on Social Networks
Separately, a robust trade exists on messaging services, where groups with thousands of participants share “before and after” photos, administration instructions and claims of next-day British shipping. Sellers promote the drug there before redirecting buyers to WhatsApp for transactions.
Learning About Retatrutide
Retatrutide is an experimental injection created by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The treatment targets three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, GIP and pancreatic hormone. Early trials indicate it could assist individuals lose up to 25% of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted online as the next Ozempic.
Medical Professionals Voice Worries
However, physicians and chemists have cautions that the distribution of what remains an unapproved medication in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could lead to individuals injecting substances of unknown origin.
Several professionals said the demand for the experimental drug could be connected to the rising cost of licensed weight loss products such as Mounjaro.
Legal Position and Enforcement
Marketing the unapproved drug on TikTok or messaging apps is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unlicensed medication that must not be marketed or distributed for personal consumption under the British medical regulations.
Several content creators attempt to circumvent the rules by referring to the substance as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted substance, but promotion and supply can still violate medicines, marketing, and customer laws, potentially leading to penalties, prosecution or imprisonment.
Service Reaction and Material Elimination
According to TikTok, the platform has removed problematic material and banned associated keywords and query recommendations. The company stated it was dedicated to keeping the platform secure and allocating resources in enhancing compliance measures.
Digital Marketplace Operations
Investigations also found communities with up to 9,000 members selling the experimental drug using Telegram's built-in search feature, which functions like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” instantly displays groups with numerous of members, populated with images of weight loss, positive reviews and detailed guides for preparing or administering at home.
Within moments of joining one community, a seller posted contact information, where most purchases occur. The seller sent an instruction manual and promised shipping within 48 hours. When questioned whether the product was authentic, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a image of a supposed testing documentation. Not one asked about body mass, medical conditions or previous experience.
Item Information and Costs
Inside these groups, posts display black plastic packages with Royal Mail stickers, stating to contain fresh supplies. One communication read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Customers can choose between powder vials, prepared at home with sterile water, or ready-to-use injectors usually priced at 160 pounds for 20 milligrams. When questioned how long a injector should be used, vendors give conflicting responses ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.
Service Oversight and Security Measures
A representative for Telegram said it actively moderated dangerous content on its platform including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Healthcare Professional Cautions
“People are administering materials they can’t verify. Even if the research behind retatrutide is sound, these online products may not include what they advertise,” stated Jason Murphy, the director of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.
A medical professional of Asda Online Doctor linked the increase in interest to current cost increases for authorized weight-loss drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices increasing, individuals are using social media. But fake treatments are extremely dangerous. You cannot know what’s contained or whether the environment they were produced in was clean,” she explained.
Her team has already seen patients harmed by self-injection from unverified sources. “We recognize the frustration, but buying from messaging apps or communication platforms is gambling with your well-being,” stated the doctor. “These substances could be impure or improperly measured.”
Producer Position
A representative from the pharmaceutical company said the substance was in phase 3 research studies and had not been reviewed or authorized by any regulatory agency globally. “Therefore at this time no one can market [it] for human use,” they said, noting that any product “falsely representing itself as a company investigational product not yet approved … may expose patients to possibly serious health risks”.
