We present a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy horror films: Sit down with your significant other and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its online premiere on Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like conventional biological terror, but inside Together lies a profound meditation about our choices in loving each other.
An Introductory Film Exploring Relationship Dynamics
Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the actors bring a unique chemistry to their roles, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.
The story commences when Tim and Millie relocate from the metropolis to the countryside for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical story element, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the tropes conclude. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While trekking near their country house, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the pair. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past typical partnership.
The entire film is a slow burn of scares, blending bits of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and delivers them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.
Complex Characterizations
A large part of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career inexorably rises.
Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and distant from his network of friends. He is terrified of the notion of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is amplified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for mobility.
The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes one partner or the other the obvious villain.
Both characters grapple with the sort of issues that arise in long-term unions over a long period. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.
Thematic Depth
While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the symbolism does not come across as clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a strong argument for staying single. Conversely, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your other half and utter, “We could get through that together”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can undertake right now.
Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
